Trail Mix: Reviews of recent trailers
May 29th 2011 18:22
This is what I'm now calling my collection of trailer reviews, which I will attempt to review on a regular basis. Here's this week's installment:
(Note: Titles link to trailers)
50/50: Really loved this trailer but perhaps I would have to a slightly lesser degree if it was someone other than Gordon-Levitt in the role. He has a natural and charismatic presence that exudes on screen. His delivery and timing seems to be great and the dialogue is quick. Rogan is portrayed as the ‘funny best friend’ which he seems to be getting type-cast as but perhaps there will be more layers to his role as the film goes on. Definitely interested in this. Grade: A-
The Muppets: A very inventive trailer and clever use of misdirection. So excited to see the muppets again on screen and with Segel penning the script, this bodes well for classic humor. Grade: A-
Take Shelter: This looks fantastic, with Michael Shannon bringing something different to the screen than his last few roles. I was rather hypnotized by his character in these mere two minutes and have a feeling I will fall in love with his performance. So very excited for this. Grade: A
The Descendants: I’m not the world’s biggest Alexander Payne fan. Love Election but can’t stand Sideways. This, however, looks very good. Clooney once again shows his depth and this looks to be a cut above your familial drama. Grade: B
The Perfect Age of Rock-n-Roll: This two minute trailer dragged on so that I can’t imagine what watching the entire film would be like. It felt halted, stagnant and melodramatic. Grade: D-
Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop: Looks like a great behind the scenes documentary of his recent tour, and naturally linked to his replacement at NBC. A-
A Little Help: Completely predictable, trying too hard to be quirky, and if the trailer irritated me I can’t imagine what the film would do. D-
Woman Art Revolution: Hmm. Looks interesting but – the trailer is very disjointed for a documentary. I wonder how dated this will be, as it started filming 40 years ago. The filmmaker says she was ‘waiting for the right ending’ but we’re given nothing modern at all in the trailer. I’m interested in it but feel the subject matter could have been presented better Grade: C
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
This is the leaked red-band trailer (I imagine this link will not work for too much longer). It’s cam quality but not unwatchable. Now, I still haven’t read the book or the seen the original film but oh my god, this is pure Fincher and a rather genius trailer. A rapid succession of shots, some repeated, some not. It’s harsh, unforgiving and perfect. Brilliantly put together. Rating: A

I'm a big Fincher fan also. My fave of the original trilogy is the first movie. I hope he does it justice.
