Trail Mix: Action, Thrills and more

Drive (red band trailer)

Been anticipating this one for a while now. Gosling looks great, as usual, the entire cast seems incredible strong, particularly Albert Brooks. Love Refn’s style, love the intentional music cues – yeah. Pretty pumped.

Kill List

Wow. Talk about an effective trailer. Short, to the point, and leaves you aching for more. It goes to show you simply don’t need these over-produced trailers that try to spell out an entire plot for you or saturate your brain with inane voice over. Then again, this isn’t an American trailer so, you know.

Cinema Blend compared the set pieces in this to that which you’d find in an over produced Broadway show. I have to agree. This looks like everything we’ve seen before, bringing nothing new to its genre. Also, the first time Josh Hartnett will be seen in films for quite some time and he’s donning a hideous mustache? Fail.

Haywire

Very much a who’s who cast, directed by Soderbergh, but it all seems kind of random and I’m not sure this untrained MMA female in the lead will be able to pull of a story in which we need to actively root for her, rather than the other famous faces on screen. I’ll see it because it’s Soderbergh but I’m a bit let down by the trailer. Hopefully this is one of those cases where the film will be much better. Also, sometimes, it takes a trailer a little while to grow on me.

In Time

I love Andrew Niccol and this is reminiscent of his highly underrated Gattaca in terms of style, content and theme. A large and diverse cast, this looks to be a promising, interesting and engaging sci-fi. The trailer is long yet it doesn’t reveal every single thing about the story – it really wets your appetite in a teasing way, and leaves you wanting so much more.

Rating: A-

Margin Call

Not sure how interested I’d be in this one if not for its cast, which is very well-rounded. It could be a smart, financial ‘thriller’ or it could be taking itself too seriously, wanting to tell a ‘true’ story that maybe people won’t care about. The verdict remains to be seen.

Cameron Crowe, on of my favorite filmmakers, directors a documentary on Pearl Jam, one of my favorite bands. Been anticipating this one. As a huge Pearl Jam fan, there’s no way I will be objective in my thoughts on this trailer. I thought it was perfect, and the usage of Given to Fly was particularly inspired. I loved how there were so many images to just give you a feel for the band and the course of the documentary, as opposed to screen interviews. This just made me smile, pure and simple.

Rating: A

Battleship

It looks like the bare minimum plot was scraped together in order to create an excuse for the same types of special effects we’ve seen in countless numbers of films. It just seems like 200 million dollars could be put to far better use, doesn’t it?

The Ides of March

I remember hearing about this project along time ago, when it was still under the title of the play it’s based on. A fantastic cast and hopefully Clooney’s direction from Good Night and Good Luck will shine through.

I loved Kill List, one of my favourite movies from this year's SFF.
Drive looks like a remake of The Driver (which I think it is). I wouldn't have known it was Refn at the helm though from the trailer.
