I recently made two lists: Top 35 Most Talented Actors and Actresses Age 35 and Under. Here's the first part of the actors list.
(Updated May 2011)
Top 35 Most Talented Actors Age 35 and Under #'s 35-26
35. Justin Timberlake (Age 29)
It’s difficult to make the transition from boybander to respected musician. It’s even more difficult to make the transition from musician to rather impressive actor. Timberlake has not only provien he can be hilarious (see: SNL skits) but is a rather talented dramatic actor, given his turns in Alpha Dog and Black Snake Moan. He did a great job in The Social Network, proving yet again his range. He'll soon be seen in two summer comedies, giving him yet another opportunity to explore his wide comedic range.
34. Jake Gyllenhaal (Age 29)
Despite taking some rather generic mainstream roles, Gyllenhaal can definitely hang with some of the hollywood heavyweights, particularly in his performances in Zodiac, Brokeback Mountain and Donnie Darko.
33. Anton Yelchin (Age 21)
So far I’ve actually only seen him in Alpha Dog and Star Trek but there’s no denying his talent. He basically stole Alpha Dog, which was not easy given the quality of the performances.
32. Josh Hartnett (Age 32)
Sadly, Josh Hartnett, although a personal favorite of mine has never been given the proper roles to show his real ability. Thus, he’s a bit low on this list for that reason. However, he was incredibly impressive in O, one of my favorite performances ever and carried both The Black Dahlia and August very well.
31. Zachary Quinto (Age 33)
Heroes and Star Trek both proved he’s someone to watch. His role as Sylar continued to be interesting long after the show was anything but.
30. Sam Riley (Age 30)
So far I’ve only seen him in his stunning turn as Ian Curtis in Control, but he’s going to be Sal in the adaptation of On the Road and that’s all the incentive needed to keep a watch on him. He’s incredibly talented.
29. Nicholas Hoult (Age 20)
Nicholas Hoult was incredible in About a Boy, became huge in the UK on Skins and more recently was captivating in every scene he appeared in A Single Man. He has eyes you can’t look away from and this vulnerability about him. And did I mention he’s only 20?
28. Enver Gjokaj (Age 28)
So far, Enver Gjokaj is best known for TV work. Maybe he’ll make the film transition; maybe not. It doesn’t matter as long as he keeps getting work. Easily the best thing about Dollhouse, Gjokaj did things with his mannerisms and voice that I’ve rarely ever seen. He’s simply brilliant.
27. Paul Dano (Age 26)
Paul Dano has been consistently impressive in films such as Little Miss Sunshine and There Will Be Blood. He’s awkward, vulnerable yet has a chilling intensity.
26. Daniel Radcliffe
Daniel Radcliffe has proved incredible growth as a child actor turned young man in the Harry Potter series. It's been wonderful watching him find his depth of emotion on camera. His choices in terms of his career are incredible admirable and both of his broadway ventures those far have been fantastic. After this summer's wrap of the Harry Potter series it will be interesting to track where he takes his career; I have no doubt he'll make smart choices.
