Top 300 Favorite Films - Part 1

September 7th 2010 03:22
Recently I redid my favorite films list -- expanding it from 200 and breaking it down in two categories: comedy and drama/everything else. It was the only way to finally accurately do some lists as I just comedies very different from everything else and I'm incredibly partial to them, particularly the cheesy 80s and 90s ones. So once these two categories were separated and 300 titles were chosen, they were then integrated together, judging each film one by one. So, here's numbers 300 to 201 of the list. Remember: this is so incredibly subjective and things I consider to be the 'greatest' movies are for the most part very different. The other good thing about this list is that it will allow for many accurate sublists (i.e i'll be reposting my favorite films of the decade list eventually as it's very different). Enjoy!

LOL Sarah, trust you to come up with a list this big ... and confidently announce that they're all in order!
I thought I was nerdy when I compiled my top 100 (actually my top 105 as I included five shorts at the end) of all time a few years back. My top twenty would be in order, but everything beyond that was too difficult to put in ranked order.
I noticed a few movies that made me shudder (You've Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally ...)!
Four of the titles are in my own top 100 (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Blood Simple, and Three Colours Blue).
I'm curious to see what will make it into your own top 100 ... Let me know if you're at all interested in my own list. I have it as a spreadsheet, I could email it to you.

wow - I admire your passion Sarah - I myself wouldnt bother, looking forward to seeing a top 20 though

A couple on here I think would rank alot higher for me (Fish Tank, Leon, Boogie Nights)

Will keep tuning in.

Bryn - Thanks! LOL, not a fan of those rom-coms huh? I love them because I found them clever and not overly sappy. Not a fan of sap. I would love to see your list!!

Shaun - Thanks! If you did make a top twenty I'd love to see it. CinemaEnthusiast and I both undertook this project together when she came to visit so you guys will be greeted to hers eventually soon as well

I don't mind the very occasional rom-com, but I'm pretty fussy ... I don't like Nora Ephron's style.
Here are the rom-coms I own, well, although a couple might be considered rom-coms:
Dating the Enemy
The Graduate
Gregory's Girl
Jamon, Jamon
Love Serenade
Lovely and Amazing

Surviving Desire
2 Days in Paris
The Unbelievable Truth

Surviving Desire is my all-time fave romantic comedy. 2 Days in Paris is also very funny, very clever. Have you seen many of these?

Such a hard job compiling a list like this. Mine always change too, and some films just get better with age.

Still some good, some bad and some ugly in there....All About Eve at 297 sets quite the benchmark.

JohnDoe -- yeah. All About Eve is incredibly high on my greatest films, but for me, I need to be able to put something on a lot for it to be higher on my favorites..
