Top 20 Underrated Films of the Decade
November 23rd 2009 00:57
This will be the first of numerous decade lists planned by CinemaEnthusiast and myself. Therefore, Katie, you should not look at any of these until we share them together
Okay, everyone has their differences on what is overrated, what is underrated. Some things people find overrated I would never think they are and perhaps the same with underrated. These are my own top 20 underrated films from 2000-2009 for various reasons. These reasons range from not getting the recognition they should have, either from critics or public opinion, being critically well-respected but not well-known by the public. Being both critically and publicly respected but was not recognized as it should have been at award shows, particularly at the Academy Awards. Some of these only needed the 'completely snubbed for a best picture nomination' to make this list. It's sad that the Academy Awards have that much power, but they do. People know the films that win best picture. It is why everyone is racing around this time of year with campaigns, just to secure a coveted nomination and hopeful win. And so when so much importance is placed on it, you want your personal pics to get it. And when the stupid Academy can get it so wrong, then they end up on lists like this
So, yes, there's many factors that go into deciding what is underrated to me. Also most of these films happen to also be some of my favorites of the decade. Now, let's stop this long explanation and get to the list! Just one last note: I did a top 50 underrated films from 1989-2009 this past summer which is not yet posted here. 19 of these 20 films are on that list.
20. Shopgirl (2005, Tucker)

18. Mean Creek (2004, Estes)

2. Elizabethtown (2005, Crowe)
1. The Princess and the Warrior (2000, Twyker)
