The Hangover.

Dir. Todd Phillips
Genre:Comedy
Running Time:99 minutes
I have a concern about American Comedy films, they tend to aim for the crotch and channel Lucille Ball screaming at 90 DBs. I am delighted to report, however, that this film is surprisingly good. The premise is simple, the script is witty and clever, it pulls no punches though. That makes it an adult film, not in the sleazy sense, but in the recognition by the script writers and director that cinema audiences and DVD buyers are much more discriminating about where their hard earned dollar is spent.
US comedy has long lost out to clever British comedy, since British writers discovered many years ago that intelligent, well observed human behaviour, not just whacky slapstick nonsense was actually what put bums on seats. In this film there is measured slapstick, there is intelligence and there are definitely crotches. This film pleases on so many levels, I believed in the characters and symapthised with their plight, and more importantly I was more interested in solving this mystery than the DaVinci code. Where did that baby come from? The tiger? And how did the dentist lose his tooth? The film was simply captivating.
It was good to see Las Vegas in natural light, instead of CSI gloom for a change too. The support characters added a great deal of charm and interest, even though they were pretty two-dimensional. If you have ever been a groomsman on a bucks night, this film will make you panic and think twice before agreeing to do it again.
I really wanted these guys to get home, and get to the wedding on time. The credits were an inspired delight at the end of the film too. This film was simple, fun and ultimately pretty clever, and I laughed iso much it made me dribble. And not a sign or sound of the late great Lucille Ball anywhere!
