Some Oscars Thoughts

February 18th 2010 00:41
The race seems to be shaping up to be rather predictable but then again we must remember the shockers that always arise. That said, Supporting Actress and Actor are completely locked up (Mo'nique and Waltz). Sandra Bullock appears to be the lock for Actress and Jeff Bridges for Actor. Bigelow hands down must win for Director. But here's the rub... best picture. This is a preferential voting system. Which means one film must get greater than 50% of the vote to win best picture (3,001 votes). The ballots are then redistributed if there is no winner with the fewest number one votes thrown out and the redistributed with the number two choices. Still if there is no winner again the film with the fewest number of #1 votes are tossed out and the ballots are redistributed with #2 votes. Because of this part of me really really feels like Inglourious Basterds can win. Or even Up. I mean really, they have huge shots. At this point, I don't feel like Avatar even has a chance. With this voting system it's hard to believe that the voters would rank the film above the ones I've named, as well as The Hurt Locker. The problem I have with picking The Hurt Locker right now is I still feel it's too small for the Academy. But hey, Shakespeare in Love won, right? In my mind it's a 4 way race between Inglourious Basterds, The Hurt Locker, Avatar, and Up. Honestly I have no idea how my predictions will go down and I probably will not do them until the weekend of the Academy Awards. What are everyone elses thoughts on the main categories? Are you as perplexed by the voting system as I am? Everytime I read it I try to grasp it a little bit more. It's starting to make a bit more sense. For a good article about it, and why the Inglourious Basterds thing makes sense, go here Really Long Link

The blog might be slow for film reviews until the Olympics end but I'll try to post some of my older lists here and there. Still have so many decade lists to do.

Surely Avatar will win Best Picture if Katheryn gets Best Director. Or do you think Avatar will only win the technical awards? I haven't seen The Hurt Locker, but personally I think Neill Blomkamp should get Best Director for his work on District 9.

... even though he's not nominated. District 9 was astonishing work for a debut feature.

Yeah the only real grey zone for the acting categories is Best Supporting Actor... but it has to be Christoph Waltz. Fingers crossed.

I'd hate to see Bullock get the Best Actress over any of her competitors. I would LOVE to see Carey Mulligan get it.

Bryn, the Academy only occasionally splits the director and best film awards apart... if Bigelow gets Best Director The Hurt Locker should also get Best Film. I'm hoping for both, it deserves a win more than any other film amongst ALL the nominees simply because it's a more unique movie.

Luke, don't you think it was a major oversight not to nominate Neill Blomkamp for Best Director District 9 ...?!

Bryn -- I think Bigelow is a complete lock but The Hurt Locker hasn't been a solid lock even though it did get the PGA and DGA. Some are still weary. I did think Blomkamp's directing was stellar -- he wouldn't have been in my personal top 5 but I would have put him in over Lee Daniels anyday.. At this point I think Avatar may be looking at technical awards only.. but I'm going to take my time before making my final predictions
Luke - Very true about the split but it could perhaps happen here -- especially with all this buzz surrounding Inglourious Basterds. I don't think Tarantino has a shot at Director but the film could take it.. I don't think there's anyone that doesn't expect Bigelow to win.. but who knows, maybe they'll go with Cameron (please no). I think Waltz is a lock as well -- he's taken every precursor award. I hate the Bullock thing. Mulligan was so amazing. I wish she was in the race! It's so sad that so much comes down to who you are in the main acting categories.. that's what's great about the supporting categories--it's usually where the Academy showcases the unknowns or those who are not conventional actors.

Mulligan *is* in the race, she's one of the five nominees.

I didn't mean it like that. I meant even though she's nominated sadly, as far as everyone is concerned, she doesn't have a chance and thus isn't 'in' the race. And I just wish she was ... she should be the frontrunner. It's so sad that everyone has written her off, stating she doesn't have a chance

I still think Zoe Saldana should have been nominated for Ney'tiri ... Very moving performance.

And what the hell is going on with the criminal overlooking of Moon???!!! Duncan Jones should be up for Best Director, Sam Rockwell should be up for Best Actor, and the movie should also be up for Best Art Direction and Best Original Screenplay.

I had some issues with Moon.. I wanted to love it more than I did. But i agree the art direction was great and Sam was incredible as usual. He'll eventually get his well-deserved oscar nom and win

I think Tom Hardy deserved a Best Actor nomination for Bronson over pretty much everyone who DID get nominated.

I just don't understand when such an obviously superbly made movie in so many ways gets completely ignored by the Academy .... And while we're on the topic of completely ignoring, how come Let the Right One In wasn't nominated in the Best Foreign Film category?

Luke, Tom Hardy, yes! Most definitely should've been nominated.

Let the Right One in was actually under eligibility for last years Oscars (it was released in May 2008) and of course it was completely overlooked. But that always seems to happen in the foreign category. This is why I have a love/hate relationship with the academy.. i love following it but I hate how they get it wrong so many times.. there's so many different things that should have been nominated above what was. That's what is so fun about doing the dream ballot. You should do one, Bryn!

Luke -- haven't seen Bronson yet but I've heard great things about the performance
