Reactions to Golden Globes and various critics awards

This is the first year in many that I haven’t done Golden Globe predix. Simply put, I completely forgot. I feel a bit underwhelmed by the nominations, though not totally sure why. I’m happy Inglourious Basterds got in, as well as Up in the Air and The Hurt Locker. Also glad that Invictus did not get in, although surprised by that as well. It’s a very Globes friendly film. They did put Clint Eastwood in, though. Interesting. Will this come to pass at Oscar time too? I would have liked Where the Wild Things Are to get in.
Michael Stuhlbarg got his much deserved nom (in the Comedy Section) for A Serious Man, but the film was shut out otherwise. Sadly, it appears he and the film will be overlooked come the Academy Awards Another brilliant comedy completely overlooked was In the Loop. Also, Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) was shutout for Best Actor. Melanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds) missing from Best Supporting Actress: completely wrong. Samantha Morton was also missing for The Messenger.
The other critics nominations seem to be shaping up to tell this tale: The Hurt Locker and Up in the Air lead the pack with Precious as the underdog and Inglourious Basterds making a strong showing, which is so nice after the ridiculous lack of love for Kill Bill. It’s odd that Precious is the underdog right now when it seemed The Hurt Locker would fill that role. The San Diego Film Critics threw a surprise in the Actress race by awarding Michelle Monaghan for Trucker. An early contender, she’s all but fallen off the map. Maybe this will put her back on? Avatar is getting universal acclaim, much to my own chagrin. I don’t want it to overtake the Academy Awards and more importantly, I don’t really want to like it. It’s interesting that all of its praise is coming from the visuals and everyone basically admits the plot is incredibly lacking and simplistic.
These are all the thoughts I have at the moment. More to come eventually as the Award season continues to unfold.
