List: Top 10 Favorite Gary Oldman Performances
July 20th 2011 00:29
My second favorite modern actor. Naturally, this was extremely difficult to limit to only ten as I’ve seen well over 30 of his performances. Certain ones require a re-watch and once I do, they could possibly make it on.
Tell me some of your personal favorites!
Top 10 Favorite Gary Oldman Performances
10. Sirius Black in the Harry Potter Films
He was perfectly cast as someone who could a) pass as crazy and then b) turn out to be so incredibly loveable/loving. A fantastic inclusion to the stellar cast that series had from start to finish.
9. Sid Vicious in Sid and Nancy
A performance in which he plays so well off the other person (in this case Chloe Webb), wherein he elevates her performance and creates something very special. Oldman makes Sid his own – doesn’t opt for flat out imitation, leaning more towards tribute.
8. Lee Harvey Oswald in JFK
I honestly can’t picture anyone else in this role – he does so much with so little and it doesn’t feel awkward in the way in which playing someone so iconically rooted in history could.
7. Milton Glenn in Murder in the First
Scary and sadistic; a flat-out chilling performance. Fascinating, tense, and thrilling. Kevin Bacon is fantastic in the lead but Oldman arguably steals the entire film.
6. Joe Orton in Prick Up Your Ears
Him, Molina and their chemistry is what makes this film as good as it is. He has a certain knack for playing real-life people and he gives this performance 110%.
5. Ludwig van Beethoven in Immortal Beloved
Such a difficult undertaking to play someone so infamous but, hey, he has experience in that matter and he excels tenfold. A beautifully serene, passionate, and romantic performance, all at once.
4. Jackie Flannery in State of Grace
I love me some crazy Oldman, and he easily delivers here. His interactions with Sean Penn are pitch perfect and he displays great conviction in a character that could have come off as completely cliché in anyone else’s hands.
3. Rosencrantz in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
He and Tim Roth provide my favorite interactions to my all-time favorite play. I couldn’t have asked for better cinematic portrayals, particular from Oldman who takes sweet naiveté to new levels. It’s hard to believe the man in this role is the same one from the rest of this list.
2. Stansfield in Leon (aka The Professional)
Oldman as a psycho is perhaps one of my favorite things to exist. Every single scene here he has classic lines – he’s hilarious, crazy, and downright evil. Perfection. Truly a cult classic performance in cinema.
1. Shelly Runyon The Contender
Oldman here is cold, calculating, and completely magnetic. He and Joan Allen engage in some intense scenes and play off one another beautifully. Definitely his most captivating performance to date.
