List: Most Disturbing Films

October 31st 2009 02:03
Many these films are disturbing for different reasons. Some only have one scene that is disturbing but it was so intense and stayed with me for so long that the whole film had to go on the list (I also have a disturbing scenes/moments list). Some are disturbing due to violence/rape, some for psychological discomfort. Enjoy!

A few curious choices there ... A handful I haven't seen. And definitely a healthy number in there that I would agree deeply with you. I did a couple of posts a while back that you might be interested in reading: What's the most reprehensible/disturbing movie you've ever seen? and Some of the most disturbing death scenes ever committed to film ...

Bryn - Chabrol's 1994 film with the beautiful Emmanuelle Beart. It's emotionally disturbing rather than visually -- that's something that I actually have a harder time dealing with. I do plan on re-watching it soon as its been about 5 years since I've seen it. I adore it though and highly recommend it if you haven't viewed it.

Sarah,
I want to see that!
I saw an amazing doco in the recent Sydney Film Festival on the making of the original version (which was never completed). My review of that doco is here.

What was so disturbing about House of Sand and Fog, I've not seen it. I've not heard of Mouchette or Laugh Clown Laugh either.

Bryn - I must see that documentary, it sounds great! House of Sand and Fog's entire concept is just incredibly bleak and haunting-- the turn the plot takes and the onscreen visuals of one scene in particular have never left my brain. There is no hope in this film and I think that alone is one of the things that is most disturbing, more so than violence. It is the same with Mouchette -- a brilliant 1967 french film by Robert Bresson -- this young girl's life is full of despair and the events that occur are so difficult to swallow. Contains one of the most beautiful/haunting endings. Laugh Clown Laugh is a silent film starring Lon Chaney. I'm kind of terrified of certain images of clowns and this film is no exception. There's also a lot of disturbing things going on emotionally between the characters and the relationships. The end is also haunting. The studio did shoot a 'happy ending' but that's been lost and it would have been a cop-out anyway.
