I think Diaz should have stayed in Vegas……..
I’m sorry. I know that Cameron Diaz is an acclaimed actress with a ton of great movies behind her, but she can be so painful to watch!!!! And this movie is no exception. All I can say is thank god they casted Ashton Kutcher!
“What happens in Vegas……..” takes us into the separate lives of Joy McNally (Diaz), an uptight and over-organised stockbroker who gets dumped by her fiancé the night of his surprise birthday party (with all their friends hiding in the dark – very funny to watch), and Jack Fuller (Kutcher), a slacker furniture maker who’s big kid attitude gets him fired from his job – by his dad! Both Joy and Jack are depressed about their situations, and are each convinced by their best friend to go and spend a weekend in Las Vegas - the one place where you can forget your worries.
Due to a hotel mix-up, all 4 end up in the same room. After separate rooms are organised, Jack convinces Joy and her friend Tipper to hang out with him and his mate Hater. Long story short, everyone gets completely wasted and Joy and Jack wake up the next morning married.
The loved up couple from the night before are not so friendly to each other the next day. While arguing over who gets to dump who, Jack uses Joy’s money on a poker machine……………….which leads to the $3 million jackpot. Jack thinks he’s just won a fortune, but as Joy so smugly reminds him “What’s mine is yours honey – we’re married remember?”
Off to court we go. The judge decides that they must remain married for 6 months and see a marriage councilor. Once they can prove that they have both tried to make the marriage work, they can go their separate ways with half the money each. So Joy moves in with Jack and the wedded bliss begins.
Hater (who is also Jack’s lawyer) and Tipper both realise how their friend can get the whole $3 million – they must get the other one to want out of the marriage. So Joy and Jack really set out to destroy marriage and get the other one to leave. They do anything and everything that annoys the other one around the house, they try to get the other one to cheat, try to make each other late for the counciling sessions which would be a breach of the court – everything they do to each other is just hysterical.
They soon begin to realise however, that being married is making other aspects in their life easier. And that they have started to develop real feelings for each other.
It doesn’t all go smoothly but you can guess what happens at the end.
As I said earlier, Diaz is becoming really painful to watch. And her age is catching up with her, which is making close-ups even more painful to watch. The role of the uptight snob suits her well – and I’m sure it would not have been difficult for her to play - however it is the other characters that keep Diaz afloat in this movie. Kutcher is excellent as Jack – quite similar to the role of Kelso that he plays in “That 70’s Show”. One of the best lines from Jack has to be “Don’t wash down the hair in the sink, I’m going to knit you a sweater. Or a scarf, I haven’t decided yet.” Hater and Tipper are also fantastic – they each play the typical role of the comedic best friend to a tee.
“What happens in Vegas……” is a really funny movie, albeit predictable. It has some hilarious scenes with some fantastic lines. It’s worth putting up with Diaz to watch Kutcher. It’s 7/10 from me.
