GET SMART didn't miss anything

If there was an award for the most perfectly casted leading man in a movie, then it would have to go to Steve Carell for his role in GET SMART. I mean, oh my God, it was like watching Don Adams from the original TV series on the big screen – just perfect.
Carell plays the loveable Maxwell Smart, the No. 1 analyst for the secret American intelligence agency known as ‘Control’. Max loves his job, but dreams of one day becoming a field agent like his idol, Agent 23 (played brilliantly by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson).
Max takes the field agent exam and blitzes it, only to be told by the Chief of Control (Alan Arkin) that he is not to be promoted as he is too valuable in his current role.
Everything is turned upside down when the agency is broken into by ‘Kaos’, a terrorist organisation that is Control’s worst enemy. Led by their notorious leader Siegfried (Terrence Stamp), they manage to expose all and kill most of Control’s field agents. With no one left to fill the role, Max finally get his chance to shine as he is promoted to Agent 86, and teams up with the already experienced Agent 99 (the beautiful Anne Hathaway). As Agent 99 has just received a whole new look with extreme plastic surgery due to being exposed on her last assignment, the agency send their only 2 unidentified agents to Russia to take down ‘Kaos’.
The pair are the complete opposite of each other – Agent 99 is so defensive and guarded and Max is like an excited puppy playing outside. 99 has to try and work with the over eager Max who (of course) manages to bumble his way through everything. As the movie progresses, 99 begins to let her guard down, and the duo become a great team and set out to destroy ‘Kaos’.
Obviously there is romance, and of course there are the usual shenanigans that go hand in hand with Get Smart – and it’s all fantastic. You know what to expect going into this movie and you are definatley not disappointed. Carell plays the goofy yet determined Maxwell Smart to a tee, Hathaway is great as Agent 99, and The Rock is fabulous as the suave Agent 23.
For those who watched the series, you know what you are in for. Thankfully fans of the series will be extremely pleased as this is one of a very small group of TV shows made into a movie that actually worked. For those of you who didn’t watch the show, just sit back and enjoy a great comedy.
It’s 8.5 / 10 from me.
