Film Review: The Burning Plain

The Burning Plain is the first feature length film from Guillermo Arriaga, writer of Amores Perros, 21 Grams, and Babel. Arriaga takes the helm behind the camera in place of his frequent collaborator, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. It's clear his experience working with Inarritu has paid off, as the pacing of his film mirrors the aforementioned trio of films. Arriaga is a master at the non-linear multi-storyline genre and this film is no exception. Perhaps the weakest of his screenplays, the film is still engaging and constantly keeps you interested and an active participate in piecing the cinematic puzzle together. Everything falls into place about 1 hour in, which seems to be the norm with Arriaga's screenplays.
Explaining the plot would be futile; all that need be said is don't go by the imdb.com basic plot synopsis. Were they watching the same film? The acting is superb all around, particularly from Kim Basinger, whom it was nice to see again. Charlize Theron gives another great dramatic performance and it begs the question why they keep throwing ridiculous blockbusters at her (Hancock and Hancock 2, anyone?). The woman is an amazing actress and deserves roles which showcase her talent. Sadly, the film has received negative reviews, calling it melodramatic and soap opera-ish. I disagree. If the film had been potrayed in linear format, then without a doubt the melodrama would have been overwhelming and inescapable. However, it's the non-linear structure which saves it from this trap. It would be wonderful for some of the performances to be recognized come award season, but this is unlikely. The film's greatest flaw is it's abrupt ending which feels awkward after the deft pacing throughout the film.
