FERRELL AND REILLY ARE A MATCH MADE IN BUNK BEDS

December 16th 2008 04:07

Every now and then Hollywood produces fantastic comedy duos that just click. Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. Cheech and Chong. Bill Murray and Harold Ramis. Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider. Well, I’m adding another to the list – Will Ferrell and John C Reilly. These guys were just awesome together in “Talladega Nights”, and this next movie is no exception.

STEP BROTHERS is the story of Brennan Huff (Ferrell) and Dale Doback (Reilly), 2 adult losers who act like children, can’t hold down jobs and still live at home. When Brennan’s mother Nancy (Mary Steenburgen) and Dale’s father Robert (Richard Jenkins) meet and fall in love, they soon decide to marry, and Brennan and Dale’s worlds get turned upside-down when they are forced to live together and become step brothers.

There is an automatic hatred between the two, and when they are forced to share a bedroom, the shit really hits the fan. Dale and Brennan are so rude and violent towards each other, you don’t know how they are going to survive.

Since Brennan and Nancy sold their home and moved into Dale and Robert’s, Dale lays down the one golden rule of the house – no one is to touch his drum set. When this rule is eventually broken by Brennan, the step brothers become involved in an all out brawl on the front yard. With their parents trying to break them up and the neighbours looking on, the fight is eventually stopped when they both smack each other in the head with a golf club and baseball bat, and simultaneously knock each other out.

Licking their wounds on the lounge, Robert tells the boys that he has no choice but to give them one week to find jobs, otherwise they are to find somewhere else to live. Nancy does not like this idea, but is forced to support her new husband.

When Brennan’s very successful, wealthy and mean brother Derek comes to visit, Robert is in such awe of him. He can’t understand how Nancy produced such a fantastic son like Derek, and such a loser son like Brennan. Dale and Brennan decide to go hang out in Dale’s tree house (yes, tree house!) because they can’t stand to hear anymore about how wonderful Derek is. They both agree that Derek is a jerk. So when Derek comes up to the tree house to pick on the guys, Dale punches him right in the face knocking him off the ladder. Brennan can’t believe that Dale just did what he has wanted to do his whole life. The guys begin to realise that they have more in common than they first thought, and become best friends.

Dale and Brennan need to team up to secure jobs and show their parents that they are responsible adults. Of course you know that this is not going to go smoothly. They come across many obstacles, including Robert’s determination to get them out of the house, the evil Derek, Derek’s crazy wife who is in love with Dale, their house being sold, Dale and Brennan trying to start their own business and Robert and Nancy’s marriage issues. And between the two of them they don’t make it easy on themselves – which is what makes this movie hilarious.

STEP BROTHERS is a funny, funny movie. It’s not rocket surgery, it’s not a deep and thought provoking masterpiece, it is just a funny, funny movie. Ferrell and Reilly are just perfect in their roles as Brennan and Dale. They play the adult loser role to a tee. And they will constantly have you laughing at all the shenanigans that they get up to (the brilliant idea of joining their two single beds and making them into bunk beds is just fantastic!!!) I really rate these two actors as a very successful comedy duo, and I really believe that it’s only onwards and upwards for Ferrell and Reilly.

STEP BROTHERS is a hilarious movie that is a must see for anyone who just wants to sit down and have a good laugh at a pair of big kids.

It’s 7 ½ out of 10 from me.
