Easy to pick, but hard to forget Sarah Marshall

“Forgetting Sarah Marshall” is the story about couch potato Peter Bretter (Jason Segel – Knocked Up, How I met your Mother), whose heart is ripped out and life turned upside down when he is dumped by his girlfriend, television actress Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell – Veronica Mars, Heroes). Sarah has decided that Peter has not grown up in the 5 years they have been together, and she needs to be with someone more mature.
Peter becomes completely lost. Sarah was his whole world and he realises that he was just a small fish in her big pond. Not only does poor Peter have to work on the set of his ex’s hit series as a music composer, and watch her with her hunky co-star Billy Baldwin, he can’t even turn on the TV or pick up a magazine without seeing Sarah’s face.
Persuaded by his step-brother to go on a holiday to help him get over the break-up, Peter heads off to Hawaii for some nice relaxing time in the sun. As predicted (but no less funny), Sarah is also holidaying in Hawaii with her new boyfriend, English rocker Aldous Snow (Russel Brand). Not only does Peter have to put up with being in one of the most romantic holiday spots on his own, he has to watch the love of his life gallivanting around the island with the famous sexed-up rock star.
Helping Peter forget his worries is Rachel (Mila Kunis – That 70’s Show) the (of course) gorgeous and friendly hotel receptionist. They begin to hang out and (surprise surprise) feelings begin to form.
Just when you think Peter and Rachel will get together, there is a moment between Peter and Sarah that turns everything on its head.
You can pretty much guess the rest. Without spoiling the ending for you, it’s quite easy to piece together the way this romantic comedy winds up. But the characters are just fantastic, and the dialogue is just brilliant. Segel is great as the heartbroken Peter, Bell plays the bitch role of the ex to a tee and Kunis is lovable and funny as Rachel. But it is Brand who almost steals the show as the self obsessed rocker who can’t understand why Sarah doesn’t want to leave Hollywood to become one of his groupies. Along with Kunu the stoner surf instructor (Paul Rudd), Matthew the waiter (Jonah Hill) who is infatuated with Aldous and determined to get him to listen to his CD, and my personal favourite Darald (Jack McBrayer – 30 Rock) the adorable honeymooner who has no idea how to sexually satisfy his new wife, this movie is definitely worth the watch despite the expected ending.
“Forgetting Sarah Marshall” – great characters, hilarious lines, heaps of laughs and a lot of fun. It’s 7/10 from me.
