District 9
August 16th 2009 10:11
Dir:Neill Blomkamp (also screenplay with Terri Tatchell)
Genre: AntiHollywood, SF, Action Thriller
Running Time:112 minutes
This is without a doubt, one of the most inspired and clever films to hit the cinema screen in a long, long time. The premise is simple Aliens have arrived - above Johannesburg - they have been settled in District 9 - now a slum, there is a hero who does not fit the bill any sense of the word and an evil corporation hoping to profit from alien weaponry. Add into the mix an emerging sense of empathy from our unlikely hero and a touch of ET phone home and this film is a winner.
At no time in this film can you say you know where this cinematic wonder will take you. It is full of surprises and plot twists aplenty to keep you on the edge of your seat. The look of the film mostly grainy with a touch of hand held and CTV thrown in give the audience an immediacy and connection that a big budget glossy production could never achieve. The characters present a gritty realism which apes the era of apartheid and that perhaps is an underlying message - that so much of value was lost through murder, ignorance and prejudice in the pursuit of separate lives.
The script is tight and moves rapidly. The weapons effects leave nothing to the imagination - there is abundant gore to satisfy lovers of cinema horror. there are also some truly nasty characters to deal with - all human of course. The baddies in this story are a combination of the MNU Corporation and the Nigerian thugs profiteering from the Alien love of cat food. The hero of the piece, Wikus van de Merwe is played convincingly by Sharlto Copley, not known as an actor, but you may have seen Blomkamp's original 6 minute short film upon which this masterpiece is based 'Alive in Joburg' (2005). Copley plays a sniper - catch it on you-tube.
The visual effects are gritty and believable - especially the alien spaceship - the details of which are truly stunning. This film hard to categorize it is more than an Science Fiction or Fantasy film and more than horror or action and adventure, it is also a journey film - so I've dubbed it SG - 'Sans Genre'. Don't miss this amazing film, and enjoy the ride.
