Awards Talk
January 6th 2010 23:43
So, Awards season is really in full swing right now. Numerous critics nominations/awards have already been announced with Up in the Air, The Hurt Locker, and surprisingly (and deservingly) Inglourious Basterds. I don't think anyone predicted it would make such a strong showing, but it has. The Producers Guild Awards were recently announced. My predictions were:
Invictus
Precious
Inglourious Basterds
Avatar
The Hurt Locker
Up in the Air
Up
(500) Days of Summer
The Hangover
A Serious Man
Sadly, I only got 7/10. The actual PGA nominations were as follows:
AVATAR
DISTRICT 9
AN EDUCATION
THE HURT LOCKER
INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS
INVICTUS
PRECIOUS: BASED ON THE NOVEL PUSH BY SAPPHIRE
STAR TREK
UP
UP IN THE AIR
What is incredibly interesting about these pics is the inclusion of 3 science fiction films. Will all 3 make the cut for the 10 best pics at the Oscars? I really can't see that happening. I feel maybe they will throw in a foreign film, but which one? The White Ribbon? Summer Hours? Broken Embraces? Will they throw in a comedy such as The Hangover or 500 Days of Summer, both of which have been on multiple top 10 lists for 2009? It's so hard to tell at this moment. What we do know is Nine and The Lovely Bones appear to be dead in the water and the 'locks' appear to be Up in the Air, The Hurt Locker, Avatar, Inglourious Basterds and (to a slightly lesser degree) Precious.
The Directors Guild nominations will be announced tomorrow. My predictions for these are as follows:
Jason Reitman - Up in the Air
Katherine Biglow - The Hurt Locker
Clint Eastwood - Invictus
James Cameron - Avatar
Coen Bros - A Serious Man
Yes, I'm going out on a limb in terms of Coen Brothers this year over Quentin Tarantino but we'll just see. Another reason why the Tarantino snub may occur is that he is not a member of the guild. Unlike the WGA, they can still nominate him even if he isn't a member, but he didn't get a DGA nom for Pulp Fiction, yet he won the Oscar.
7 Films have been narrowed down in contention for the Visual Effects Academy Award
“Avatar”
“District 9”
“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”
“Star Trek”
“Terminator Salvation”
“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”
“2012”
These will be voted upon and then 3 will be nominated for the Academy Award.
The USC Scripter Nominations were announced. These ones are always rather interesting. They were:
Crazy Heart – Fox Searchlight Pictures
Scott Cooper, screenwriter
Thomas Cobb, author
District 9 – Tri-Star Pictures
Neill Blomkamp, screenwriter and author
Terri Tatchell, screenwriter
An Education – Sony Pictures Classics
Nick Hornby, screenwriter
Lynn Barber, author
Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire – Lionsgate
Geoffrey Fletcher, screenwriter
Sapphire, author
Up in the Air – Paramount Pictures
Jason Reitman, screenwriter
Sheldon Turner, screenwriter
Walter Kirn, author
In terms of the Writers Guild Awards, numerous scripts have been disqualified for various reasons. In fact, some of the best scripts of the year. These include:
District 9
In the Loop
Up
Fantastic Mr. Fox
An Education
Inglourious Basterds
A Single Man
The Road
This begs the question, what else is LEFT? Obviously, the WGA's will not prove to be a reliable Oscars precursor. Nevertheless, it should allow for A Serious Man to get in (a film that is being overlooked in every single aspect). At this rate, the weak-scripted Avatar is bound to get in as a WGA nominee! Oh, the horror!
And.. that's about all for Awards talk for now. I must write reviews for A Single Man and Broken Embraces but I'm not in the best of moods right now. Hopefully tomorrow.
