83rd Annual Academy Award Nominations and Reactions

January 29th 2011 01:55
I still haven't posted my Dream Ballot (something I usually do prior to the nominations being announced) but I know a lot of it in my head and a lot would be different. Alright, here we go. If you see a .5 in the score that means I got my alternate correct, which is worth .5 points. Below you'll find a list of the nominees as well as my reactions and scorecard

Actor in a Leading Role

Javier Bardem in “Biutiful”
Jeff Bridges in “True Grit”
Jesse Eisenberg in “The Social Network”
Colin Firth in “The King's Speech”
James Franco in “127 Hours”

My score: 4.5 out of 5

Reactions: I very nearly put Bardem in my regular guesses rather than alternate. He was the complete darkhorse with people like Julia Roberts and Sean Penn rallying behind him to get him an Oscar nominations. He surprised similiarly in this category with Before Night Falls. It's really cool to see him there and it's the only performance here I haven't seen and very much want to. This being said, I hate that he ended up geting Ryan Gosling's spot. I really, really wanted him in here. He was fantastic in Blue Valentine. It was either going to be Gosling or Duvall battling it out for that last coveted spot, and Bardem snuck in as the underdog. Basically this category contains a lot of guys I'm really rather crazy about.

Actor in a Supporting Role

Christian Bale in “The Fighter”
John Hawkes in “Winter's Bone”
Jeremy Renner in “The Town”
Mark Ruffalo in “The Kids Are All Right”
Geoffrey Rush in “The King's Speech”

My score: 4.5 out of 5
Reactions: Another category in which I almost, almost put exactly this. I talked about it for a few minutes with cinemageek when we were going over everyone's predictions and I said, i really really think Garfield could get shut out here. But then I said, nah, because the SAG's and the oscars don't usually match up fully and just because Garfield was shut out by the SAG's didn't mean it would happen at the Oscars too. So, i put him in. I really loved him in The Social Network and I adore him in general but I'm okay with this. John Hawkes was really very fantastic and I'm happy to see the recognition for Winter's Bone. Awesome that Mark Ruffalo got in here, too after some people were kinda crapping on him earlier in the year.

Actress in a Leading Role

Annette Bening in “The Kids Are All Right”
Nicole Kidman in “Rabbit Hole”
Jennifer Lawrence in “Winter's Bone”
Natalie Portman in “Black Swan”
Michelle Williams in “Blue Valentine”

My score: 4.5 out of 5
Reactions: First off, MICHELLE WILLIAMS. My god this was such a packed category this year (which is SO NICE TO BE ABLE TO SAY) and I love, love, love that she got in. It makes the Gosling thing a bit easier to swallow but not by much. Jennifer Lawrence = hell yes, Portman obviously is freaking fantastic and this was a given. As is Annette Bening. Where I varied was I took out Kidman. Originally I was always going to have her in. But I felt Rabbit Hole really, really died down and didn't get the critical award recognition or noms that people thought it would. So, I'd taken her out.

Actress in a Supporting Role

Amy Adams in “The Fighter”
Helena Bonham Carter in “The King's Speech”
Melissa Leo in “The Fighter”
Hailee Steinfeld in “True Grit”
Jacki Weaver in “Animal Kingdom”

My score: 4.5 out of 5
Reactions: I love, love that Steinfeld got in. I had her as an alternate, figuring because there was talk of her being put in Lead Actres (WHERE SHE BELONGS) that she might split her own votes. Didn't happen. Kunis was left off and that's exactly what should have happened.

Animated Feature Film

“How to Train Your Dragon” Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois
“The Illusionist” Sylvain Chomet
“Toy Story 3” Lee Unkrich

My score: 3 out of 3
Reactions: Went just the way everyone thought it would. I can't wait to see The Illusionist and I wish How to Train Your Dragon would stream on netflix already because I really want to watch it.

Art Direction

“Alice in Wonderland”
Production Design: Robert Stromberg; Set Decoration: Karen O'Hara
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1”
Production Design: Stuart Craig; Set Decoration: Stephenie McMillan
“Inception”
Production Design: Guy Hendrix Dyas; Set Decoration: Larry Dias and Doug Mowat
“The King's Speech”
Production Design: Eve Stewart; Set Decoration: Judy Farr
“True Grit”
Production Design: Jess Gonchor; Set Decoration: Nancy Haigh

My score: 3.5 out of 5
Reactions: This category went a little nutty last year so I decided to be bold. Didn't work too well. But I put Harry Potter because they went with it last year. I'm not sure why I didn't put the King's Speech here.

Cinematography

“Black Swan” Matthew Libatique
“Inception” Wally Pfister
“The King's Speech” Danny Cohen
“The Social Network” Jeff Cronenweth
“True Grit” Roger Deakins

My score: 5 out of 5
Reactions: These were the predictable 5 and matched up to the ACE Edies completely.

Costume Design

“Alice in Wonderland” Colleen Atwood
“I Am Love” Antonella Cannarozzi
“The King's Speech” Jenny Beavan
“The Tempest” Sandy Powell
“True Grit” Mary Zophres

My score: 3.5 out of 5
Reactions: Unlike Nine from last year, they shunned Burlesque this year so that didn't get in here like I predicted. So, so happy about I am Love .. what a nice inclusion. I almost put The Temptest in as a reg instead of an alternate -- should have.

Directing

“Black Swan” Darren Aronofsky
“The Fighter” David O. Russell
“The King's Speech” Tom Hooper
“The Social Network” David Fincher
“True Grit” Joel Coen and Ethan Coen

My score: 4.5 out of 5
Reactions: As everyone knows, this category yieled one of the biggest shocks in the absence of Christopher Nolan. I really never saw that coming, therewere essentially 3 to 4 locks here and he was one. I don't think the Coens necessarly took his place -- it originally would have been O. Russell that did but The Fighter gained sooo much momentum lately. I adore the Coens and they made a fantastic film so I'm not unhappy with their inclusion in the least. I probably would have knocked out Hooper from the group if I had to, but that's just a matter of opinion.

Documentary (Feature)

“Exit through the Gift Shop” Banksy and Jaimie D'Cruz
“Gasland” Josh Fox and Trish Adlesic
“Inside Job” Charles Ferguson and Audrey Marrs
“Restrepo” Tim Hetherington and Sebastian Junger
“Waste Land” Lucy Walker and Angus Aynsley

My score: 3 out of 5.
Reactions: Ugh. It's so hard to predict this category -- you have the films everyone knows about and then the smaller ones and you never know what will happen. I really didn't expect Waiting for Superman to get snubbed -- that was a shock.

Documentary (Short Subject)

“Killing in the Name” Nominees to be determined
“Poster Girl” Nominees to be determined
“Strangers No More” Karen Goodman and Kirk Simon
“Sun Come Up” Jennifer Redfearn and Tim Metzger
“The Warriors of Qiugang” Ruby Yang and Thomas Lennon

No score/reactions

Film Editing

“Black Swan” Andrew Weisblum
“The Fighter” Pamela Martin
“The King's Speech” Tariq Anwar
“127 Hours” Jon Harris
“The Social Network” Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter

My score: 4.5 out of 5
Reactions: Again, this was the other wtf moment with the Inception missing. 127 Hours took it's place and honestly, if you're going to shut out a film that was so intricite with action sequences and it's crafting, don't make it with 127 Hours in which I had huge, huge issues regarding the editing. HUGE.

Foreign Language Film

“Biutiful” Mexico
“Dogtooth” Greece
“In a Better World” Denmark
“Incendies” Canada
“Outside the Law (Hors-la-loi)” Algeria

My score: 3.5 out of 5
Reactions: Another category which is nearly impossible to accurately guess. again, you have your main 5 everyone is predicting but then others just pop in. I very much want to see Dogtooth and it's very cool it got in when a lot were predicting it wouldn't.

Makeup

“Barney's Version” Adrien Morot
“The Way Back” Edouard F. Henriques, Gregory Funk and Yolanda Toussieng
“The Wolfman” Rick Baker and Dave Elsey

My score: 1.5 out of 3
Reactions: Ugh, what a crappy score. Make-up always brings surprises. This year it was the lack of Alice in Wonderland. I tried to predict shockers and failed.

Music (Original Score)

“How to Train Your Dragon” John Powell
“Inception” Hans Zimmer
“The King's Speech” Alexandre Desplat
“127 Hours” A.R. Rahman
“The Social Network” Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross

My score: 4 out of 5
Reactions: Tried to predict a shock by going with Desplat's The Ghost Writer score (which I personally prefer) instead but no go. Very happy that Trent didn't get snubbed. After the Eddie Vedder shit, I simply don't trust the academy in that regard.

Music (Original Song)

“Coming Home” from “Country Strong” Music and Lyric by Tom Douglas, Troy Verges and Hillary Lindsey
“I See the Light” from “Tangled” Music by Alan Menken Lyric by Glenn Slater
“If I Rise” from “127 Hours” Music by A.R. Rahman Lyric by Dido and Rollo Armstrong
“We Belong Together” from “Toy Story 3" Music and Lyric by Randy Newman

My score: 3 out of 4?
Reactions: um, I thought there were 5? This is.. confusing. So, I guess I got 3 out of 4 then.. I originally had Coming Home as an alternate but took it out -- thought maybe they'd go for the illusionist as they picked a french film last year.

Best Picture

“Black Swan” Mike Medavoy, Brian Oliver and Scott Franklin, Producers
“The Fighter” David Hoberman, Todd Lieberman and Mark Wahlberg, Producers
“Inception” Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan, Producers
“The Kids Are All Right” Gary Gilbert, Jeffrey Levy-Hinte and Celine Rattray, Producers
“The King's Speech” Iain Canning, Emile Sherman and Gareth Unwin, Producers
“127 Hours” Christian Colson, Danny Boyle and John Smithson, Producers
“The Social Network” Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti, Michael De Luca and Ceán Chaffin, Producers
“Toy Story 3” Darla K. Anderson, Producer
“True Grit” Scott Rudin, Ethan Coen and Joel Coen, Producers
“Winter's Bone" Anne Rosellini and Alix Madigan-Yorkin, Producers

My score: 10 out of 10
Reactions: Basically, everything that was expected to got in. I am so, so, so happy that the one non-safe film: Winter's Bone made this cut. So so happy.

Short Film (Animated)

“Day & Night” Teddy Newton
“The Gruffalo” Jakob Schuh and Max Lang
“Let's Pollute” Geefwee Boedoe
“The Lost Thing” Shaun Tan and Andrew Ruhemann
“Madagascar, carnet de voyage (Madagascar, a Journey Diary)” Bastien Dubois

No predictions/reactions

Short Film (Live Action)

“The Confession” Tanel Toom
“The Crush” Michael Creagh
“God of Love” Luke Matheny
“Na Wewe” Ivan Goldschmidt
“Wish 143” Ian Barnes and Samantha Waite

No predictions/reactions

Sound Editing

“Inception” Richard King
“Toy Story 3” Tom Myers and Michael Silvers
“Tron: Legacy” Gwendolyn Yates Whittle and Addison Teague
“True Grit” Skip Lievsay and Craig Berkey
“Unstoppable” Mark P. Stoeckinger
My score: 3.5 out of 5
Reactions: I always suck at the sound categories.

Sound Mixing

“Inception” Lora Hirschberg, Gary A. Rizzo and Ed Novick
“The King's Speech” Paul Hamblin, Martin Jensen and John Midgley
“Salt” Jeffrey J. Haboush, Greg P. Russell, Scott Millan and William Sarokin
“The Social Network” Ren Klyce, David Parker, Michael Semanick and Mark Weingarten
“True Grit” Skip Lievsay, Craig Berkey, Greg Orloff and Peter F. Kurland
My score: 3 out of 5
Reactions: Never saw the Salt nomination coming.

Visual Effects

“Alice in Wonderland” Ken Ralston, David Schaub, Carey Villegas and Sean Phillips
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1” Tim Burke, John Richardson, Christian Manz and Nicolas Aithadi
“Hereafter” Michael Owens, Bryan Grill, Stephan Trojanski and Joe Farrell
“Inception” Paul Franklin, Chris Corbould, Andrew Lockley and Peter Bebb
“Iron Man 2” Janek Sirrs, Ben Snow, Ged Wright and Daniel Sudick

My score: 4 out of 5
Reactions: Big thing here was Tron getting left off. Made a last minute call with Harry Potter and glad I put it in. Tried to predict a shock with Robin Hood as an alternate -- they did throw in a shock but it was Hereafter instead.

Writing (Adapted Screenplay)

“127 Hours” Screenplay by Danny Boyle & Simon Beaufoy
“The Social Network” Screenplay by Aaron Sorkin
“Toy Story 3” Screenplay by Michael Arndt; Story by John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton and Lee Unkrich
“True Grit” Written for the screen by Joel Coen & Ethan Coen
“Winter's Bone” Adapted for the screen by Debra Granik & Anne Rosellini

My score: 4 out of 5
Reactions: Again, tried to predict a shock with including The Town and leaving out Toy Story 3. Bad move. Love to see Winter's Bone here. But honestly, the best screenplay I've ever read, ever, will take this.

Writing (Original Screenplay)

“Another Year” Written by Mike Leigh
“The Fighter” Screenplay by Scott Silver and Paul Tamasy & Eric Johnson;
Story by Keith Dorrington & Paul Tamasy & Eric Johnson
“Inception” Written by Christopher Nolan
“The Kids Are All Right” Written by Lisa Cholodenko & Stuart Blumberg
“The King's Speech” Screenplay by David Seidler

My score: 4.5 out of 5
Reactions: the other huge WTF moment: no Black Swan. Wow. Just. Wow. I had The Fighter as an alt and that's essentially what took it's place.

Overall, pretty pleased with my numbers. Shocked that The King's Speech got 12 noms -- I really cannot place too much focus on the overall numbers anymore as that had me making a lot of changes. Shutter Island totally shut out -- I didn't expect that at all.

What were your thoughts on the Academy Award Nominations? What shocked you the most? Who/what was unfairly snubbed? Who/what shouldn't even be included?

Daft Punk were snubbed for Score.
Mila Kunis was much better than Jacki Weaver, I don't care what anyone says. I haven't seen the other movies.
TRON: Legacy was snubbed for Visual Effects.
Piranha 3D was snubbed in the Makeup category.
Nolan snubbed for Director.
Was Megamind released too late for inclusion??
There are numerous movies included I haven't seen, but I find my tastes are further excluded the older I get.
I've only heard of Dogtooth in the foreign language category.
