November 8th 2009 22:13
Subjective vs. Objective is an important distinction when creating lists. This is why I have many lists that are favorite and greatest. Some films or what have you obviously wind up on both lists but the order varies from each. Here is my Greatest Films of the past decade which will be followed by my favorite.

Pretty nice list there cinemaistruth,

There were a couple in there I didn't enjoy so much and I would change the order of a few but hey its your list and it seems we share similar cinematic tendencies.

I will have to go away and think of my own top 10 from the last decade.....so your going from the new millennium on, instead of starting in 1999 right?

Right, 2000 to present. Plan to do a 90 to 99 list at some point as I have a serious love for 90's independent film. They were basically my introduction to cinema as an art form rather than a way to past the time. Would love to see your list! A.O. Scott and Michael Phillips on At the Movies are actually doing their own Top 10 of the Decade. They release one of their choices each week

For me this list is more curious than your favourites list. What is your criteria for what makes a film "great" ? As much as I love making lists, and as much a cinephile as I am, I've actually never made a list of what I think are the greatest films ... what I do know is the list would probably feature movies that aren't as flawed as my list of favourites LOL ... I can identify what I see as brilliantly made movies that achieve all that they were meant to do ... But a list of greatest I think I would find to difficult. Good on you for being able to single them out in such opinionated fashion ... and therein lies the Rub ... Movies are such a subjective experience ...

I think, in terms of greatest I look more at the technical and structural aspect, the narrative.. just the entire picture as a whole. With favorite, as I said some do overlap but I recognize that a lot are more about what's entertaining rather than what is perfection, or close to it. It's really tough to put into words.. it's just the feeling you get after you know you've just seen an incredible film. It becomes an experience.. larger than life. It almost.. makes your life more complete, in a way. I've also made my greatest films of all-time list, which needs to be redone and thus I will not be posted in anytime soon. Now with that list I was very objective for the most part, and focused on the cultural and social implications of the film, as well as critical recognition.

Sarah, now you're starting to sound like a real film geek ... Yeah, I also love how we - the individual - change, but movies don't. Which is why revisiting a movie you didn't like, or did like, many years later can be a completely different experience. Of course many films remain as they were to us, but others we end up appreciating on a whole new level, or they don't work for us anymore ... My top ten faves haven't really changed in the last fifteen or so years, the next ten haven't changed that much either, although they are less in order than the top ten. Beyond the top twenty and it becomes simply a list of favourites in no particular order that stretches to about 100.
I love that the film experience is affected by when he first saw the movie, the state of mind we were in, whether we've given the movie repeated viewings ... My favourites also are movies that I get different things from each time I view it. I'm sure you're the same. All cinephiles swear by movies as keeping us sane.

Hell yeah, they keep us sane. That reminds me of a quote from my favorite book, Drawing Blood by Poppy Z. Brite. "Zach didn't know if living his life like a movie serial was healthy, but it certainly kept him sane." I sorta lived by that quote for many years. You really have no idea how geeky I am, lol.

Well, welcome to the Orble Movie Geek Club If you lived in Sydney I'd invite you to our annual Xmas drinks so you can meet a few of the other Orble veterans ... Well, the ones who are actually game enough to show their faces which tends to be just Jon (Orble founder) and myself. John Doe (who writes the Film & TV Reviews) and I used to talk up a veritable storm, but he's moved to Vermont now, so now I just chew Jon's ear off in between beers.

Yeah, founded by Jon, a Sydneysider in early 2006. I've been on-board making waves in the Dark since August '06 ... one of the few Sydney Orble veterans
