2012 Academy Award Nominations

January 24th 2012 15:15
Here we go folks, a list of all the nominees, including my tallies and reactions in each category. I didn't do all that terribly. Probably the same as every year. Alternates count as .5 points

BEST PICTURE
"War Horse"
"The Artist"
"Moneyball"
"The Descendants"
"The Tree of Life"
"Midnight in Paris"
"The Help"
"Hugo"
"Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close"

My score: 7 out of 9. Technically I did put War Horse in, but I put it in the number 10 slot. Therefore, didn't make the cut in terms of predictions.

Reactions: War Horse was kind of surprising as it seemed to have lost a lot of steam. No Bridesmaids isn't terribly surprising from this sort of crowd. Tree of Life = awesome. AWESOMe. So damn happy. The only huge out of left field shocker here is Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, a film in which everyone thought was dead in the water. It's this years The Blind Side.

LEAD ACTOR
Demián Bichir, "A Better Life"
George Clooney, "The Descendants"
Jean Dujardin, "The Artist"
Gary Oldman, "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy "
Brad Pitt, "Moneyball"

My score: A sad 3 out of 5

Reactions: Never again will I go against my gut or let other pundits sway me. This is exactly what happened in terms of me taking Demian Bichir out at the last minute as an alternate and putting Michael Shannon in instead. Would have at least gotten half a point! And I began regretting not putting Oldman in this morning. Happy Oldman is finally got recognized. One of my favorite people ever. Nice to see support for a smaller film with Bichir -- he's this year's Bardem which is why I originally put him as my alternate. Sad that Fassbender had to get the boot as it truly is a mesmersing performance. In a perfect world, both he and Shannon would be in this category.

LEAD ACTRESS
Glenn Close, "Albert Nobbs"
Viola Davis, "The Help"
Rooney Mara, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo "
Meryl Streep, "The Iron Lady"
Michelle Williams, "My Week With Marilyn"

My score: 4.5 out of 5

Reactions: Really glad Mara got in. Everything else here was mostly expected. Not really surprised the academy overlooked Swinton although I did have her in. Still need to see that film. Sigh.

BEST DIRECTOR
Michel Hazanavicius, "The Artist"
Alexander Payne, "The Descendants"
Martin Scorsese, "Hugo"
Woody Allen, "Midnight in Paris"
Terrence Malick, "The Tree of Life"

My score: 4.5 out of 5

Reactions: So glad Malick got in. So, so glad. Really didn't think it was gonna happen.

SUPPORTING ACTOR
Kenneth Branagh in "My Week with Marilyn
Jonah Hill in "Moneyball"
Nick Nolte in "Warrior"
Christopher Plummer in "Beginners"
Max von Sydow in "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close"

My score: 4 out of 5

Reactions: I predicted a shock in this category but it was the wrong shock. Nice to see von Sydow recognized in this way. Because this category was announced before the other main ones I really thought this would be their only recognition of Extremely Loud -- totally wrong.

SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Bérénice Bejo in "The Artist"
Jessica Chastain in "The Help"
Melissa McCarthy in "Bridesmaids"
Janet McTeer in "Albert Nobbs"
Octavia Spencer in "The Help"

My score: 4 out of 5

Reactions: Glad I opted Woodley out for McTeer -- they really do love to snub younger actors/actresses in the supporting categories. Chastain basically deserves one special award for turning out great performances in films she made a while ago that lucky for us, landed all in one year <3

WRITING (ADAPTED SCREENPLAY)
"The Descendants" Screenplay by Alexander Payne and Nat Faxon & Jim Rash
"Hugo" Screenplay by John Logan
"The Ides of March" Screenplay by George Clooney & Grant Heslov and Beau Willimon
"Moneyball" Screenplay by Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin. Story by Stan Chervin
"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" Screenplay by Bridget O'Connor & Peter Straughan

My score: 3.5 out of 5

Reactions: Didn't expect The Help to get snubbed here. Had my doubts on Tattoo because I wasn't sure they'd nominate Zaillan twice and turns out I was right but I still put it in.

WRITING (ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY)
"The Artist" Written by Michel Hazanavicius
"Bridesmaids" Written by Annie Mumolo & Kristen Wiig
"Margin Call" Written by J.C. Chandor
"Midnight in Paris" Written by Woody Allen
"A Separation" Written by Asghar Farhadi

My score: 3 out of 5
Reactions: Margin Call was the big surprise here. And I should have gone with A Separation. I was holding out hope for Young Adult, I really was.

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
"A Cat in Paris" Alain Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli
"Chico & Rita" Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal
"Kung Fu Panda 2" Jennifer Yuh Nelson
"Puss in Boots" Chris Miller
"Rango" Gore Verbinski

My Score: 2 out of 5. Pathetic
Reactions: First of all; surprised there were actually 5. Second of all; shocked there was no TinTin after it was literally stealing things from Rango prior to this. Now we don't need to worry about that match-up!

"Bullhead" Belgium

"In Darkness" Poland
"Monsieur Lazhar" Canada
"A Separation" Iran

My Score: 3.5 out of 5

"Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory" Charles Ferguson and Audrey Marrs
"Pina" Wim Wenders and Gian-Piero Ringel

"Midnight in Paris" Production Design: Anne Seibel; Set Decoration: Hélène Dubreuil

CINEMATOGRAPHY
Guillaume Schiffman, "The Artist"
Jeff Cronenweth, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"
Robert Richardson, "Hugo"
Emmanuel Lubezki, "The Tree of Life"
Janusz Kaminski, "War Horse"

My score: 4 out of 5
Reactions: If Tree of Life hadn't been nominated here, it would have been ridiculous.

COSTUME DESIGN
Lisy Christl, "Anonymous"
Mark Bridges, "The Artist"
Sandy Powell, "Hugo"
Michael O'Connor, "Jane Eyre"
Arianne Phillips, "W.E"

My score: 4 out of 5

"The Artist" Anne-Sophie Bion and Michel Hazanavicius
"The Descendants" Kevin Tent
"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall
"Hugo" Thelma Schoonmaker
"Moneyball" Christopher Tellefsen

My score: 5 out of 5 WOOHOO!
Reactions: Glad I took War Horse out at the last minute.

MAKEUP
"Albert Nobbs" Martial Corneville, Lynn Johnston and Matthew W. Mungle
"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" Edouard F. Henriques, Gregory Funk and Yolanda Toussieng
"The Iron Lady" Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland

My score: 1 out of 3
Reactions: As I said, I always get 1 out of 3 here. No one every really knows what they'll do.

MUSIC (ORIGINAL SCORE)
"The Adventures of Tintin" John Williams
"The Artist" Ludovic Bource
"Hugo" Howard Shore
"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" Alberto Iglesias
"War Horse" John Williams

My score: 3.5 out of 5

MUSIC (ORIGINAL SONG)
"Man or Muppet" from "The Muppets" Music and Lyric by Bret McKenzie
"Real in Rio" from "Rio" Music by Sergio Mendes and Carlinhos Brown Lyric by Siedah Garrett

My score: 0 out of 2
Reactions: First of all, I thought I put Man or Muppet in, but I guess I didn't. Second of all, so confused why there are only 2 songs nominated. Third of all, really, Sarah this is pathetic. Zero? Really?

SOUND EDITING
"Drive" Lon Bender and Victor Ray Ennis
"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" Ren Klyce
"Hugo" Philip Stockton and Eugene Gearty
"Transformers: Dark of the Moon" Ethan Van der Ryn and Erik Aadahl

"Rise of the Planet of the Apes" Joe Letteri, Dan Lemmon, R. Christopher White and Daniel Barrett
"Transformers: Dark of the Moon" Scott Farrar, Scott Benza, Matthew Butler and John Frazier

My score: 3 out of 5
Reactions: I don't think anyone predicted Real Steel. No ToL which most were predicting. Swapped Transformers out at the last minute.

Final total score: 70 out of 104 points. Not terribly shabby. Decided to tally it that way as a final total this year. Never have before but saw the guy who runs In Contention do it. He got 76 so I don't feel that bad! Also, for the first time ever one of my No Guts No Glory's came true. That should give me points right there Oh, got the number of nods for Hugo correct too - 11. Not sure the count on the other films yet.

Don't get me started.
I'm not hosting, nor will I attend, any Oscar parties in protest over the numerous snubs, in particular Drive.
