15 Most Anticipated Films at Cannes 2011

May 13th 2011 23:06
The Cannes Film Festival is happening right now. There’s glitz, there’s glamour, but most importantly there’s cinema. Here’s a list of my 15 most anticipated films that are screening at Cannes.

15 Most Anticipated Films Screening at Cannes

1. Martha Marcy May Marlene (dir. Durkin)

Notes: This trailer really, really amazed me when I saw it the other week. Absolutely cannot wait.

2. Tree of Life (dir. Malick)

Notes: Penn, Malick, Pitt. Looks to be epic.

3. The Skin I Live In (dir. Almodovar)

Notes: It’s Almodovar re-teaming with Banderas for something that looks just as messed up – if not more so – as Law of Desire. In other words: terribly exciting.

4. Melancholia (dir. Von Tier)

Notes: This trailer was stunning and while I’ve been nervous to venture too deeply into Von Tier, I feel this one won’t be too much of a problem.

5. Sleeping Beauty (dir. Leigh)

Notes: Not really caring about the negative reviews – incredibly intrigued by this.

6. The Day He Arrives (dir. Hong Sangsoo)

Notes: Such a great trailer. Made me want to watch it rightnow.

7. Drive (dir. Refn)

Notes: Great cast and the director did Bronson, which was fantastic. Been anticipating this one since it was announced.

8. This Must Be the Place (dir. Sorrentino)

Notes: My favorite actor: Sean Penn. All I need in the world. Another one I've been waiting for forever.

9. We Need to Talk About Kevin (dir. Ramsay)

Notes: It’s a subject I don’t feel has truly been tackled cinematically from this angle before. It’s important to do so. Based on a book I really must read.

10. L’apollonide Souvenirs de la maison close (dir. Bonello)

Notes: Rather obsessed with the trailer.

11. Snowtown (dir. Kurzel)

Notes: Very powerful trailer. Been hearing some great things.

12. Jeanne Captive (dir. Ramos)

Notes: I’m a sucker for Joan of Arc stories. Sadly, just got word it wasn't very good but I don't really care.

13. The Artist (dir. Hazanavicius)

Notes: Set in the silent film era. I’m completely in.

14. Polisse (dir. Le Besco

Note: Very intrigued by the premise and the look of the film.

15. Restless (dir. Van Sant)

Notes: It’s Van Sant and I adore Mia Wasikowska. While it looks like it could be ranging into far too sentimental territory i.e. Finding Forrester, I’m still very interested. If this ends up being the case it’s simply proof in point that Van Sant shouldn’t make anything less than R-rated films.

Hey, it's Katie!!

Awesome list!! Glad you liked the Hong Sang-soo trailer. Been obsessed with it since watching it. Ditto on L'Appolonide. I have to watch the trailer for Snowtown. So excited for all of these! Pretty sure The Artist is actually a silent film in addition to being set in the late 20's. I'm so excited for Drive even though I didn't like Valhalla Rising. Still have to see Bronson. Great job!! : )

Katie again!
I forgot to mention that it's Mia Wasikowska in Restless, not Mulligan.

Hey Kate! Yeah, the Hong trailer blew me away, oh my god. It had kind of a french new wave-ish vibe to me.. like Godard could've done something like it in 60s.

I was hearing murmurings that it was a silent film too! So cool. Is there a trailer yet? I didn't see one. There were so many to go through and so many hardly had any details.. I'm sure the more info that comes out, the more this list may change.

Watch the Snowtown trailer as soon as you can! I seriously loved it.

I haven't seen Valhalla Rising but Bronson really impressed me. I didn't watch the Drive footage cause I really don't like watching full clips from films; I prefer to stick to trailers.

Melancholia and the Gus Van Sant are by far my faves. Suss out my revioew on Snowtown on my site if keen for a read - it's very bleak.

Ooh and very keen for Tree of Life - so much buzz about it.

Noice list!

Well considering you get to see most movies before us down under, at the very least we could get to see one of our own movies before America does!
